Arepa is a type of food made of ground maize dough or cooked flour prominent in the cuisines of Colombia and Venezuela. It is eaten daily in those countries and can be served with accompaniments such as cheese, avocado, or split to make sandwiches.
Also known as Palitos De Queso (Cheese-Sticks) is a fried breaded cheese stick or a spear of bread dough with queso blanco (white cheese) in the middle. It is formed into a breadstick and then usually fried in oil for 6 minutes at 400 °F (204 °C). Sometimes tequeños are oven-baked instead of fried.
They are little ham-filled, crescent-shaped rolls. Quite popular for breakfast in Venezuela, they are sometimes called Venezuelan croissants, but they have the rich texture of a dinner roll rather than the flaky texture of a true croissant.
An empanada is a stuffed bread or pastry baked or fried in many countries in Spain and Latin America. The name comes from the Spanish verb empanar, meaning to wrap or coat in bread.
Howdy! see? Where we are from we also have the same ways to greet our friends and family but in a different language. We come from a generation of bakers and cooks that started in one of the southern states of Venezuela (Apure). Many fellow Venezuelans in the area were very familiar with our bakery known everywhere in our small town as “Reposteria El Carmen”. This was a place for everyone to come anytime in the day, share a few stories, have a delicious meal and move on with the day in a better mood. In the past decade, political changes brought danger and a lower standard of living that forced millions to flee, our family among them.
When our lives were crumbling, the United States opened its doors to us, and we are now proud to call this our home. Though adjusting to a new culture has been a struggle at times, we wouldn’t change a thing. The hardest thing to learn, by far, is the language, and some of us still struggle with that! Ha! Our family is thankful first to God, and to all our friends, those native to the USA and our fellow hispanics as well, who have helped us achieve our goal of bringing Venezuelan flavor to the amazing people of Memphis.
Many people ask why we chose the south. We had other choices on the table but when we visited the south and found that it was very similar to our south in Venezuela then we fell in love with this place. The welcoming and friendly people of the south really made for us the perfect environment for us to flourish.
Most of all, we hope that you enjoy our food! Our family wants to make sure that you always have a good experience at Caiman. Please bear with us, as this is a new experience and we are trying our best.
As mentioned in our Facebook page, this is not a fast food restaurant even though your brain tells you it is as soon as you come in and see the environment. The type of food we serve is mostly handcrafted and cannot be cooked too fast or too slow. It is authentic Venezuelan food and almost everything has to be made from scratch. We try to keep most of our cooking as natural as possible.
